Started out the mornings in New Orleans with beignets at the famous Cafe Du Monde.  You may have purchased their coffee grinds before that comes in the yellow can with the brown logo.  That's how I recognized them.  Located in the French Quarter, Cafe Du Monde opened in 1862 and has been serving these puffy clouds of fried dough since.

Beignets are French, square, doughnuts with powdered surgar on top.  You can get an order of 3 for $1.82.  So cheap! Each order comes witha  glass of water which I end up using to wash my hands.  The sugar  gets pretty much everywhere when the breeze comes throught, but sooo worth it (there's always far more on the plate than you need).  Try the cafe au lait too.  This place is open 24 hrs 7 days a week so you can feed the craving any time you want.  I miss my morning beignets!  Delicious!!
